Introducing Food Storage Tips: Another Step Toward Zero Waste

Today we're excited to announce our newest feature: Food Storage Tips – now available in the Mill app.

At Mill, we want to help you keep the food that you buy fresh and tasty, stretching out your grocery trips and food budget. Our new Food Storage Tips feature addresses upstream food waste by giving you the knowledge you need to keep your food fresher, longer.

Expert-Backed Guidance

Food storage can take a lot of guesswork. Do I put this avocado in the fridge or on the counter? In a ziplock bag or paper bag? What about when it’s half-eaten?

To help demystify these questions, we’re using information from the Waste-Free Kitchen Handbook, a book by Dana Gunders. Dana is the President of ReFed, a national nonprofit working to end food loss and waste across the food system by advancing data-driven solutions to the problem. Dana is a nationally recognized expert on food waste and has been instrumental in developing trustworthy storage recommendations that are practical, effective, and easy to implement in your daily life.

What You'll Find

The Food Library in the Mill app now contains over 100 storage tips with detailed guidance on how to properly store:

  • Fruits and vegetables

  • Dairy products

  • Meat and seafood

  • Pantry staples

  • Oils, Condiments & Spices

Simply tap on a given food item to learn the optimal storage location (counter, refrigerator, or freezer), recommended containers, and specific techniques to extend shelf life.

For example: Did you know that storing unripe avocados in the fridge will prevent them from ripening? Or that eggs shouldn’t be stored on the kitchen door, because it’s too warm? These practical tips help you keep food fresher, longer.

Available for All

The Mill app – including our new Food Storage Tips feature within the Food Library – is freely available to everyone, whether you own a Mill or not. Simply download the app to access our comprehensive food library and storage guidance.
